The Camargue horse remains one of the symbols of this French region. The foals are born black, brown or dark gray. Over the years, their coat fades, only turning light gray at the age of 3 years. The Camarguais is said to be one of the oldest breeds in the world, even though its origin appears to be a mystery.
The Camargue horse has traditionally lived in freedom in the marshes. This breed is known as one of the most robust because it adapts perfectly to the excesses of the Mediterranean climate. Harsh winds, humidity, biting cold in winter, high heat and insects in summer. Hence the horse’s nickname: “made by the mistral, salt and courage.”
